今日はビスクドール作りを始めたきっかけについて書かせていただきます。

私がビスクドールを作るきっかけは、サッチャーの時代である８０年代に足掛け８年に渡るロンドン滞在中に現地の本屋さんで一冊の本を見たのが始まりです。「ビスクドール教えます」というページに乗っていた可愛い光沢のある人形の顔が目に止まりました。それまで作っていた布製・ワックス製・刺繍製のものよりもずっと輝いてました。

すぐに居ても立ってもいられず、二日間講習に参加するために車でモーターウェイ（M1)を１時間以上北に走り、一人で入会しました。

イギリスでは洋服などは教えず、顔のペイントの仕方、窯の使い方、型のとり方など、作品作りよりも商品の売買が目的だったように思います。私の場合、一体できるとすぐに洋服を作ったのはまぎれもありませんが、人形の洋服や靴の作り方の本を買ったり、そのうちに電気窯（人形のHeadを焼くもの）や型（モールド）も買い集めていくようになりました。

最初の頃は顔だけ描いてボディーはすでにゴムでつながっていた子供タイプの人形を作っていました。ビスクドールと一言でいってもファッションドール・ベビードール・オールビスクドールなど色々な種類があると知り、新しい人形に挑戦していきました。

新しい物を手掛けるときはいつもどきどきします。また出来上がりの瞬間は今でもワクワクします。そうしているうちにいつの間にか私の長年の趣味となっていました。

I would like to write a little about why I started making bisque-dolls. 

In 1980's when I was in U.K, I found a book about bisque dolls in a book shop.  The book was about "guide to bisque-dolls", and I was impressed with the shiny and cute doll in the page of "a class for experiencing bisque doll making". 

I wanted to attend the class, so I went to the town where the class was held by driving for over an hour on M1 (motorway) to the north to attend the 2-day session.

In the class, the purpose of the session was not doll creation itself, like making clothes and accessary, basic painting face/molding handling or using a kiln, but was focused on selling/buying products. In my case, after the basic training, I started immediately to make clothes.  Then I started buying books on making clothes and shoes of dolls, and then even bought a kiln (for baking/heating heads/bodies of dolls) and molds. 

At the beginning, I just painted faces and used child-type bodies that were already joined with elastic.  I learned there were all sorts of different bisque-dolls such as fashion dolls, baby dolls, and all-bisque-made dolls.  I continued challenging making new dolls.  It is always a lot of fun to make new dolls. And when the doll is finished, it also gives me joy.  As time passed by, it became my long-time hobby.  

June Bride - ６月の花嫁

イギリスは大変な選択をしたようです。今後どうなっていくかわかりませんが、変化を見守っていきたいと思います。

 

英国には、エイプリルシャワー（4月の雨）、メイフラワー（5月の花）、ジューンブライド（6月の花嫁）という季節を表す言葉があります。

 

April showers bring forth May flowers*ということわざもあります。5月になると、有名なチェルシー・フラワーショウがあります。

 

6月は雨が少なく好天の日が多いので、結婚式をあげるのに適した月ということで、式をあげるカップルが大勢いるのではないかと思います。

 

アンティーク・マーケットも、ホテル、お城、公園、道路などさまざまな場所で、開催されます。

 

ロンドンのハイドパークの西にあるポートベローロード・マーケット - 映画ノッティングヒルの恋人で有名です - は、観光客に人気で、毎週土曜日にひらかれ、私は、その日は朝5時に起き、車ででかけていました。ビスクドールに使うアンティークのレースや布地やブローチなどを購入した、思い出の多いところです。

 

今回の花嫁衣装の人形は、14インチ（37センチ）のジュモーです。

*不幸の後には幸福が来るという意味合いの一連の季節にまつわることわざです。卯月(うづき)の驟雨(しゆうう)は皐月(さつき)花を咲かせる。

 In England - they have a variety of seasonal wording - like April Shower, May Flower, June Bride....

Even in Japan or Asia - June is a rainy/humidity season - but  June in England is less rainy and sunny days continue - which is a good month for weddings. 

Antique Markets are held at a variety of places - like Hotels, Castles, Parks or roadside.

Portbello Market which is held by the west of Hyde Park is very poplular for tourists.  Every Saturday I woke up at 5AM and drove to the market.  I have many memories of buying antique clothes, brooches, and laces for bisquedolls. 

The wedding doll of the picture is Jumeau of 37cm.  I have also attached a previous picture which shows a wedding ceremony.

ファッションドールとは何かということについては、いろいろな意見があるようです。1860年から1890年の期間に、フランスで作られた、ビスクの頭と、皮のボディーを持ち、成人女性のプロポーションを持った人形で、作られた時代に流行していた豪華な服を着ている人形という意見が、最も包括的な定義のようです。

ファッションドールは何の目的のために作られたのかということについても、小さな子供の遊具として作られたという意見と、オートクチュールの製造者が、マネキンとして使うために作られたという意見とが、あるようです。

現実には、いずれの目的のためにも使われたのではないでしょうか。

人形も色々なものがあり、木製やワックスやパピエマッシュ（紙・石灰）やチャイナ（陶磁器）などでつくられました。

私のファッションドール人形は、頭部。肩・手・足は１２００度で焼成したビスクでつくっており、胴体は布・革などで制作してます。 

A bisque doll was originally developed as a “Fashion Doll” to share/show fashion of the upper class as a kind of mannequin rather than toys for children. 

What is a fashion-doll?  There are various stories.  The most common fashion doll was made in France around 1860~1890,  has a bisque head, has an adult proportion with body made by leather, and wearing the latest fashion.  Some definition has only the limitation of a Parisiennea (Parisian woman) of Jumeau or a Lady doll who “doesn’t” wear the prevalent/trendy wear. 

From a historic viewpoint - there are many fashions of a luxury doll from an ancient era. 

The purpose of fashion dolls is as toys for children and another is as mannequins for Haute couture producers. Probably there were both purposes for the dolls.

There are also a variety of types of dolls made from woods, wax, paper marche, china etc.. They have an adult proportion wearing prevalent/trendy clothes.

In my fashion doll the head, shoulder, hands, and legs are made by bisque and baked/heated at 1200C with the body made by leather and fabric.
